GeoPark Information Centre

Permanent exhibition on the geological history of the Lower Rhine region

The new information centre in Wesel powerfully demonstrates that geological and cultural history go hand in hand. Anyone who wants to understand the Lower Rhine region in all its facets should not miss this journey through 400 million years of Earth’s history. COORDINATION has designed the new location in Wesel for the GeoPark Ruhrgebiet. Visitors can now look forward to numerous interactive stations and exhibits to touch, participate in and marvel at.

The Ruhr region is known worldwide for its coal. But geologically, the region has much more to offer. This is precisely what the new GeoPark information centre highlights: Here, visitors can explore 400 million years of Earth’s history — from the rocks of long-vanished seas to the forces of the Ice Age that shaped today’s landscape. A journey through Earth’s history — from tropical seas to Ice Age tundras to today’s river landscape. Concise graphics, vivid illustrations, selected fossils, and interactive stations impressively convey just how much the area has changed over time.

The exhibition begins in the foyer with a large-scale topographical display. The highlight here is the interactive drilling game, in which children (and adults!) can virtually “drill” through the ground layers and discover the landscapes and creatures of the past. In addition, short films introduce the various subregions of the entire GeoPark. A custom-made piece of furniture houses a large model of the underground in Wesel and its surroundings, also revealing the many former mining shafts.

Fossils, rocks, vivid graphics, and models bring the past to life — set against an impressive display wall featuring life-size animals. Another exhibit focuses on the Rhine’s gravel: A large panorama of the Rhine basin locates the typical rocks found on the Rhine’s banks — from the red iron pebbles of the Lahn-Dill region to Maas eggs (flint nodules found along the Meuse (Maas) river). Touching is expressly permitted!

Thanks to its friendly and approachable design, COORDINATION succeeds in presenting the sometimes abstract scientific content in an easily accessible form. Large-scale illustrations, created specifically for the exhibition, vividly depict the respective topics — from ancient marine creatures to the mammoths of the last Ice Age.
